multi-genre proposal

My Family History

I plan to do my research project over my family history.  I know some about my family, but there are a lot of holes especially on my dad’s side. He doesn’t talk to his family much anymore, so I never really go to know them. Therefore I’ve only heard stories about my family history and where I come from.  If I really started to look into it though my dad would get back in touch with his relatives and I could trace back the history and get 1st person interviews.  Other than that I can go to ancestry.com and fill in other information that my surviving family members can’t tell me.  This is important to me, because recently I’ve had many family members pass away, and its made me appreciate the members I have left.  It also makes me want to know more about where I come from and if everything I’ve heard is true.

multigenre project response

Ewww research papers....
The paper that I found to be the most interesting was “Happily Ever After in the Media.”  It’s not that I fully agree with everything the author has to say, but the topic interest me and the way the writer presents it makes it pleasing to read. She takes a serious topic, relates it to what we know (fairytales from our childhood) and puts a funny/ sarcastic twist on it. I also loved how she gave definitions of common words and phrases used throughout what she read for research. It makes it not feel like a research paper and would be a project that I actually wanted to complete.

United Nations Millennium Goal number 3: Gender Equality

Gender equality and better education:

I chose to write about having gender equality and helping to empower women around the world. In a lot of countries around the world it is very difficult for women to try and make something of themselves, or get out of poverty.  This is because they are seen as being lower than men and are discriminated against. This leaves them being dependent on men and not being able to see much outside of their own house hold.

This is something that sparked my interest when I read about it because you always hear on the news about woman not being able to go to school and how American kids take for granted the school system and gender equality that we have. I wasn’t aware that it was this bad everywhere around the world, I never really thought about it. It does, however, make since and I agree that action needs to be taken to help these women discover how much they can do with their lives if that is what they wish to do. I believe that the change won’t be overly difficult, once the forces can get men to stand behind this cause and help the woman in their lives succeed.

Reading Response #2: Start something that matters

 What are My Passions?

If I never had to worry about money, I would probably spend all of my time with my family and friends. And pursue some of my hobbies like writing, reading, and practicing different forms of art. I haven’t put much thought into what kind of work I would do, or how I would help others. I always just kind of dreamed of relaxing and getting to pursue my own dreams. If I could fit those into helping others somehow, then my life would be complete, and I would never loath going to work.

When looking back on my life, I just want to know I helped someone and impacted their life in a major way. I want them to be able to say that because they knew me, they never gave up. I think that is why I’m so drawn to psychology, that way I can help those who need it, on a regular basis. My heart has always been to help my friends and those around me, and let them know that someone cares and loves them even on their worst day.

 OAK backpacks

I chose the OAK backpacks as one of my top picks, because I like what they stand for. They based their whole organization off of personal experience, and it wasn’t one you normally hear about. They are helping local kids in the U.S. and doing more than just feeding them, they are actually helping them get an education and learn manners that kids in a normal house hold take for granted.

 Oregon Pub

I’m not a fan of alcohol, but looking at this pub from a business perspective the owner is doing something right. In the video he brings up that with a low economy, like what we have now, one of the firsts things people take out of their budget is giving to charities. At the same time, all alcohol sales tend to rise. So this man saw a great opportunity to make a non for profit and support/boost his local economy by keeping everything local. I think this is a fantastic idea, and I believe he will do some major things to help out his community, while doing what he loves.

Good Spread peanut butter

Honestly one of the main reasons I chose this video was because it kept me interested. Unlike most of the videos it had humor and showcased what they had to say at the same time. They also gave a quick over view on where they come from, and the journey they took to get where they are now. As a viewer of potential supporter I appreciate knowing those kinds of things, because it makes me feel like I know their motives a little better. I also really like their idea of “buy one give one.” It reminds me of TOMS, which I am also a big supporter of.
